When to buy individual health insurance: before or after I get sick?
I am unemployed and have not had health insurance for several years. I get my primary care from a free clinic which has a limited range of what they can treat, and certainly cannot offer any high level of care, or long term care for a serious illness. I was diagnosed several years ago with a condition which can, over time, lead to cancer. The symptoms are worsening and persistent. I feel an urgency to schedule some tests. Of course, I'm worried about a serious illness, but equally worried about being able to find treatment, and pay for it.I may possibly be able afford individual health insurance once I start an upcoming contract project. No insurance will be provided since I'll be a contractor, but the income would be enough to start an individual insurance policy. Would it be best to try to secure the insurance first, and then get the necessary tests? Or use some of the new income to get the tests, and then see about insurance? I'm not sure how any of this would rate in the area of 'pre existing conditions'. I have a diagnosed condition which CAN lead to cancer, but certainly have never been diagnosed with cancer. I also haven't had the condition checked in depth in several years.So, I'd love any advice on making good choices when obtaining individual insurance. Once I have insurance will I need to wait a year to cover the pre existing condition waiting period before I get tested?There is a lot to consider here, and it would be great to get some thoughtful feedback from people who have some experience with managing their own health insurance, and health care. Input from someone in the health care and insurance industries would be especially helpful. Thank you all so much.
